Synesthesia

Synethesia

Synethesia is defined as:

A neurologically based phenomenon in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway.

This sensation is beautifully conceived in the short film Synethesia created by the directing duo Ian Kibbey and Corey Creasey, known collectively as Teri Timely. This short film is an incredible sensory mix-up of hearing colors, tasting words and reading sounds.

Pioneer DVJ & Mixer

DVJ-1000 and SVM-1000

This $14k system ($3k for each DVJ-1000 “turntable” and $8k for the SVM-1000 Mixer) allows you to mix DVD content, live camera feeds, set cue-points, and integrate beat-sensitive visuals effects in real-time. The mixer supports up to 4 av channels and the touchscreen gives you the instant power to manipulate video and audio with ease. This gear would have been a nice addition to my rig during my VJ & Light Jockey days at Capital City.

Music I’m Digging Lately

Black Cab Sessions @ SXSW, Austin

When I’m not rocking out to the instrumental scores of Mastodon’s recent album Crack the Skye, I keep the groove fueled with the help of the fine fellows over at Disco Dust.  Other gems that have been inspirational of these past several weeks is Dan Deacon, Sin Fang Bous, The Dodos, and The Season Standard. If you like that kind of stuff then you should check out what the guys at Black Cab Sessions are up to. This site serves up over 50 rad one-take cab recording sessions from a few pretty outstanding groups. I am excited to see more channels for good music such as the Black Cab Session as well as the Take Away Shows, which also spontaneously records bands in parks, streets, and elevators. I like the spirit of curating rare moments of musical bliss.  I have hope for the future of the modern musical landscape. Good will overcome evil in the battle against sharing and spreading music thanks to everyone who makes it more accessible for the rest of us.

Keep up the good work and keep the tunes coming!

A Market Perspective

Read this article

Jesse Warden, seasoned developer and Atlanta native, shares his interesting perspective on the current climate for Flash and Flex work in the 2009 marketplace. Among many factors, shifting budgets have led to false starts on projects and result in devs having to look for new work to fill the void. His metrics include job offers during the month of March as well as the ratio of employers asking for candidates vs. the amount of candidates asking for opportunities.  Although it is no surprise that these are tough times for even seasoned veterans, he ends on this positive note of encouragement:

“If you do Flash or Flex work, keep your chin up. While slow, things are pretty decent all things considered.”

In addition, I am optimistic that the future will unfold a creative revolution fueled by the marriage of great ideas and solid execution. Volatility in the marketplace presents challenges as well as opportunities and 2009 will be the year that defines a decade by setting an important benchmark for the next generation of an eager industry.

Hello Monday

Hello Monday

Hello Monday is a boutique design show located in Denmark that does some hot print and web work. I love the approach to displaying their work as stacked strips of images. I also like that they display a radial color pallet for each project.
